staff profile alberto sanz

I have dedicated my career to studying the role mitochondria play in ageing. Since I started to work in a laboratory as an undergraduate, I have produced more than 45 original manuscripts, accumulated over 3,000 citations and an H-index of 27.  I have published as first and/or senior authors in several prestigious journals such as Cell Metabolism, PNAS, FASEB J or Antioxid and Redox Signal.

In 2010, I was awarded a Starting Grant from the European Research Council to establish my own laboratory in Tampere (Finland). One year later, I was nominated as a Research Academy Fellow by the Finnish Academy (equivalent to a BBSRC David Phillips Fellowship). In 2013 I accepted an offer from Newcastle University to become a Research Fellow, and moved here in 2014.

Since I moved to Newcastle, the Faculty of Medical Science has provided me with outstanding support in the form of access to state-of-the-art installations, personalized mentoring, specialized training to become a successful group leader as well as excellent clerical support for writing grant applications and recruiting staff.  Thanks to all the support received my laboratory is currently supported by funding from the BBSRC, MRC and Wellcome Trust, and we have contributed to the advance of our field publishing in top journals such as Cell Metabolism and Nature Communications.
