Research

My principal research interest is the optimisation of acetylcysteine treatment regimens for paracetamol poisoning to reduce adverse reactions without compromising efficacy. I was the Principal Investigator in Newcastle for the Scottish and Newcastle Anti-Emetic Pre-Treatment in Paracetamol Poisoning (SNAP) clinical trial. This showed that a shorter 12h regimen of acetylcysteine reduced the incidence of vomiting and anaphylactoid reactions (published in Lancet 2013).

This regimen has been implemented in clinical practice in Edinburgh, Newcastle and London and being audited for effectiveness compared to the conventional 21h acetylcysteine regimen.
