MRC Confidence in Concept

MRC Confidence in Concept

Confidence in Concept (CiC) awards are intended to accelerate the transition from discovery research to translational development projects by supporting preliminary work or feasibility studies to establish the viability of an approach.

Newcastle CiC funding will support investigators to undertake further scientific and technical development of an idea that is close to translation, to establish the scientific and/or commercial potential of a concept.

Our first successful Institutional grant was awarded in 2014, and the MRC has supported our applications to renew the award annually since then.  Our awards to date have totalled £3.7million.  We have been able to leverage over £16 million of follow-on funding for projects as a result of Newcastle CiC awards.

Current call

Medical Research Council Confidence in Concept funding

The current call for Newcastle University’s 2019 MRC Confidence in Concept (CiC) award is now live.

Awards are intended to accelerate the transition from discovery research to translational development projects by supporting preliminary work or feasibility studies to establish the viability of an approach.

Successful CiC projects should lead on directly to successful funding from larger translational funding schemes and/or to develop productive translational collaborations with pharma/industry with clear onward plans to secure further funding/support.

A two-stage evaluation process sees applications reviewed at Expression of Interest stage. Only those that are successful at EoI stage will be invited to work up full applications including accurate costings, where they will again be formally reviewed by a Panel.

Applications will be assessed on scientific grounds, with the potential to convert the CiC project to downstream translational research grants a key consideration.

Governance

We run a 2-stage application process whereby an Expression of Interest is reviewed by 3 reviewers before being considered at a panel meeting.  Investigators successful at EoI stage are then invited to submit a full proposal which is considered by a large panel of peers and industry representatives.

CiC 2019 Panel members will be updated shortly.
