Visa D for Trainees: No work permit is required, but applicants need to apply for a specific national visa D for trainees and the employer needs to submit a notification of employment to the Labour Market Service (AMS) and the tax authority at least three weeks prior to the start of the internship. Although this activity is work permit exempt it will be necessary to acquire a visa D for "working purposes" for any traineeship up to six months (regardless whether the applicant is a visa-free national or not). |

Overview of Permit Options Specifically for Researchers |
Residence Permit "Researcher" The Residence permit "researchers" entitles the holder to reside in Austria and carry out research activities; a separate work permit is not necessary. Main requirements:
Validity of the residence permit: up to two years, it can be renewed for a duration of 12 months for the purpose of finding a job or establishing a company if the applicant intends to get another residence permit "researcher" or a "Red-White-Red-Card" or a " Blue Card." Accompanying Dependents: Spouses and minor children are allowed to apply for residence permit card for dependents. The residence permit card will be issued for the same duration as the principal's card. They will receive a red-white-red-plus card which gives them access to the job market. Residence Permit "Mobile Researcher" (intended stay longer than 180 days). Applicants with a residence permit card researcher from another EU country can apply for a residence permit as mobile researcher in Austria. Main requirements:
Validity of the Austrian residence permit for mobile researchers is bound to the validity of the residence permit "researcher" from another EU member state. Extension is possible up to two years (in total). Accompanying Dependents: Spouses and minor children are allowed to apply for residence permit for dependents ("Aufenthaltsbewilligung Familiengemeinschaft"). This residence permit will be issued for the same duration as the principal´s card. The application must be filed at the Austrian embassy. |

Eligibility criteria varies depending on the region where the work is performed and on the type of permit (trainee permit, highly skilled permit, standard permit). Factors determining the permit includes age, salary and duration of work. If the third country national is not visa exempted, they should obtain a visa C in order to enter Croatian territory. As UK nationals are visa exempted, they are authorised to come and study in Croatia for less than three months but need to register their address within 48 hours at the Foreigners’ Office, Central Police Station, Petrinjska ulica No. 30 (Odsjek za strance, Policijska uprava Zagrebačka) upon their arrival in Croatia and if they are staying in private accommodation (rented apartment or similar). For the students who are staying at hotels or student halls of residence the address is automatically registered. |

A UK national studying in the UK and working in the Czech Republic during their studies would be required to obtain an Employee Card or short term employment visa if the assignment is short. A UK national studying in the Czech Republic on an accredited full-time programme would have free access to the labour market and only a Labour Office Registration would be required, as their residency status would be secured by their student visa.

Estonia

There is no specific student visa option in Estonia Visa national students can apply for either a short-term stay (type C – less than 90 days) or long-stay visa (type D – 3 to 12 months) to be allowed entry into the Schengen area. From 01 April 2021 the Estonian Alien's act will apply to UK citizens. If a period of study is longer than one year, a student should apply for a residence permit for studying in Estonia. If a period of study is shorter than one year, a student should apply for a D-visa (the student needs an invitation letter by the educational institution).
Duration: a residence permit for study will be issued for the completion of a full-time curriculum for the whole period of study. The duration of the period of study depends on the level of study. The maximum period of validity of a residence permit for study is five years. Accompanying dependents: family members can apply for residence permits as well to accompany the principal. |

If the UK student wants to carry out paid work in Estonia for a period of up to one year, a registration of the short-term employment at the PPA in Estonia will need to be carried out. In addition, if the student intends to stay longer than 90 days in any period of 180 days in Estonia, a visa D will need to be applied for after 1 April 2021 (important note: in Estonia, UK citizens are considered EU nationals from an immigration point of view until the 31 March 2021). The main requirements to do a registration of the short-term employment at the PPA are the following:
This registration can be done online or via e-mail, and should be submitted by the Estonian employer. The processing times amount to 15 business days. Note: Registration for short-term employment (up to one year) as a top-specialist is also an option, but stricter requirements apply (for instance: different company requirements, higher salary threshold: EUR 2814/month, etc.). The processing times for this kind of registration amount to ONE business day. |

If the UK student wants to carry out unpaid work in Estonia for a period of up to one year, a registration for internship activities will need to be submitted to the PPA in Estonia. Estonia does not currently have a research specific visa. For visa nationals, the researcher can apply for either a short-term stay (type C – less than 90 days) or long-stay visa (type D – three to 12 months) to be allowed entry into the Schengen area. From 1 April 2021 the Estonian Alien's act will apply to UK citizens. If a period of employment is longer than one year, a researcher can register short-term employment in Estonia and/or apply for a residence permit for employment in Estonia. Duration: This type of permit will be issued up to two years and it is possible to extend. Student Residence permit For a training course lasting between three months or six months, a student must obtain a temporary long-stay visa, which will require no further formalities upon arrival in France. For training or a course exceeding six months, the student must obtain a long-stay visa, equivalent to a residence permit, which will be subject to further formalities on his/her arrival in France. Regarding the documentation, the student must provide proof of enrolment or the entrance examination invitation in the French university. In the “student examination” visa application, the student must include his/her invitation to the entrance examination and proof of the serious nature of the studies. A temporary residence permit for the purpose of studying is also granted to a foreigner when the studies which constitute a continuation or supplementation of studies undertaken in the territory of another European Union Member State are not covered by an EU program or a multilateral program including mobility measures or an agreement between at least two educational institutions/higher education providing for intra-EU mobility, and the foreigner meets the above-mentioned conditions for granting a temporary residence permit.
