Newcastle University is closely monitoring the global situation with regards to COVID-19 and is discussing the ongoing academic and social impact of social distancing measures in the UK.

Newcastle University Students Abroad

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises British people against all non-essential travel worldwide.

Newcastle University is now requiring all students return home and students studying and working have been contacted with advice on this process. You can read the University’s notification in full, from our Academic Registrar. Please check your email regularly for further updates.

Our Summer Schools programme for 2020 has been cancelled. Applicants who will still be eligible next year have been given the opportunity to keep their details on file with us, to be notified when the scheme is launched again next year.

Students Studying Abroad or on Exchange at Newcastle University

Face-to-face teaching has been suspended for the remainder of the academic year. Please see the Registrar’s above notification as well as reading the Covid-19 academic FAQs page. which answers many questions related to teaching and assessment.

If you are currently studying at Newcastle University and are on a Short Term Study or Tier 4 visa, you must inform the Global Opportunities Team of the date of your departure - please email

If you are an Erasmus student, please email with your Certificate of Departure to be signed digitally prior to departing Newcastle.

We are unable to answer calls as we are working from home, and are currently dealing with high email traffic, but we will get back to you as soon as we can; your patience is appreciated.

We would like to assure Newcastle University students that you will not be academically disadvantaged in needing to return home immediately. Mitigation for circumstances will be reviewed in the coming weeks by the University.

We understand that you may feel anxious and concerned about the potential impact of COVID-19 on your plans for the next academic year.  We are working hard liaising with our partners and your placement hosts in the UK and overseas and are closely observing developments together in order to plan for the future as best we can.  We will ensure that you are updated as soon as there is further information available. 

Although we hope for the best, it is important for you to be aware that COVID-19 is still likely to have a profound impact on this type of activity next year, whether you plan to work or study overseas or here in the UK.

Whatever your situation, please do not make any travel bookings or financial commitments as yet for your placement or exchange.  Please know that your safety and wellbeing are taking priority in our planning and considerations.
