To provide an in-depth and current understanding of the fundemental aspects of human nutrition including the scientific bases for setting nutrient recommendations and dietary guidelines.
Through this module, students will gain a sound understanding of the relationship between nutrient intake and the maintenance of health in humans and an insight into research methods used in human nutrition research.
Outline Of Syllabus
1) Nutritional surveillance (e.g. dietary patterns in different population groups and countries,
changing dietary trends over time)
2) Updated markers of nutritional status
3) Dietary reference values: current methods for determining requirements
4) Role of body composition as a modulator of nutrient metabolism and requirements
5) Current debate and controversies related to the use of nutrients or food components for maintaining health and preventing diseases through epigenetic mechanisms.

This module will use lectures and tutorials to deliver key information relevant to understanding the fundamental aspects of human nutrition including the bases for nutritional recommendations.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Using different types of assessments measures the various aspects of students’ learning and ability to synthesize and apply their knowledge. The use of varied assessment formats including a case study as well as presentations yield a deeper and more meaningful understanding of what students know and are able to do.
The exam tests the ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of specific aspects of human nutrition and to integrate information from the lectures and additional reading into clear, well argued essays.
