Aims

As a part of the graduate certificate in architectural practice, the module aims to extend and deepen students’ knowledge and skills in relation to professional architectural practice through self-directed study and investigation of a particular subject that is of interest to them.

This module aims to extend and deepen students’ knowledge and skills in a particular area of professional architectural practice that is of interest to them. This will be through self-directed study and investigation of a particular subject that will be reported either in the form of an extended case study of a construction project or business process they have been engaged in, a research report, or a curated design portfolio based on work undertaken either as part of their practical training or privately.

Outline Of Syllabus

The topics and issues covered will be geared towards equipping students to undertake a self-directed special project that will enable them to meet the learning outcomes of this module. These include: research methods and writing, design representation, etc.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The main focus of this module is on independent learning of students. However, lectures and will be used to introduce students to various concepts related to independent study, and small group teaching will be used for discussion and application of those concepts. The dissertation and project-related supervision is intended to provide one-to-one support for students (either face to face or by email/telephone of other means) in their independent study and assessment preparation. The combination of these teaching activities is designed to project instruction and tailored support for their individual projects.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The formative assessment in the form of a research (or independent study) proposal will allow students to be given more structured feedback and guidance on their chosen projects. It will also serve as a mid-point assessment of their progress in achieving the learning outcomes of the module. The final (summative) submission will allow the assessment of all learning outcomes of the module and will give students the scope to sufficiently explore and report on their chosen projects.
