To develop the Mechanical and Marine Engineering students' understanding of electrical and electronic systems through structured lectures, tutorial exercises and laboratory experiments. The module will be assessed by examination and laboratory report.
Digital electronics: Binary representation of information, binary arithmetic, Boolean algebra, logic gates, truth tables, combinational logic circuits, arithmetic circuits, Karnaugh maps, synchronous sequential logic circuits, D latch and D flip-flop, registers, design of finite-state machines.
Electrical Engineering: Principles of AC circuits. Basic polyphase arrangements. AC drives. Production of a rotating magnetic field. Characteristics, frequency, pole number and synchronous speed. Per-unit systems. Polyphase synchronous machine. Basic operation, steady-state operation, magnetic field interaction, equivalent circuit. Characteristics using equivalent circuit. Phasor diagram, calculations. Polyphase induction machines. Basic characteristics, steady-state operation, equivalent circuit. Per-unit slip. Reduction of equivalent circuit for output calculations. Calculation of behaviour using equivalent circuit. Starting characteristics, star-delta connections.

The module is delivered by non-synchronous pre-recorded lecture materials, along with synchronous live revision/tutorial sessions and live practical demonstration. The lectures and tutorials are presented in a way to be relevant to mechanical and marine engineers and closely link in with the practical experiments.

A coursework assignment will be set to assess the students’ knowledge on the module. In addition practical lab exercises will be set to assess theoretical understanding and problem solving skills.
