To undertake six practical engineering exercises in the following topics:

A2 – Naval Architecture (Ship Stability)

Outline Of Syllabus
A1 – Marine Engineering Shell-and-tube Heat Exchanger laboratory - The laboratory based practical provides an opportunity for practical application of marine engineering principles. It develops practical skills and demonstrates the relevance of taught material in MAR2118. In addition it highlights the differences between pure theory and practical application and provides the students with the opportunity to develop systematic scientific methods, including data collection, recording and data analysis under time-limited conditions.
A2 - Marine vehicle flooding test – The practical is based in the hydrodynamic laboratories and provides an opportunity for practical application of principles taught in MAR2108. The practical examines and tests asymmetrical flooding of a ship model. Students are required to calculate heel and trim and other related flooding issues and compare with experimental results.
A3 - Structural design, make, test – The practical utilises fundamental structural data to design a truss structure of minimum weight to support a specified load. The designed structure is fabricated and then tested to destruction. Students present their structural design and develop a structural indicator to assess the truss performance.
A4 - Marine vehicle resistance test – The practical takes place in the towing tank to introduce students to measurement, data collection and data analysis techniques for a ship resistance test. This develops and demonstrates the practical application of material taught in MAR2110.
A5 - MATLAB and Simulink – The session includes programming language introduction on arrays and matrices, functions, graphics and data handling. The use of simulation tools such as Simulink to learn applications and project design are included.
A6 - Marine production exercise – These sessions includes material flow and workstation utilisation in a shipyard: familiarisation with layout and flow of work. Product work breakdown; workstation cycle time. Facility layout design. It provides a practical application of the material studied in MAR2113.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
A1-A4, the lectures will provide the briefing of the task to be completed, while the practical session will give the students hands on experience in laboratory experiments.
A5-A6, the lectures provide guidance and tutorial support for the completion of the group tasks.
All other activities will promote independent self-study as well as team work.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The practical/lab reports will assess both the breadth of knowledge, written communication, literacy and ability to work as a group (IKO1-6 and ISO1-2). The practical sessions will provide the students with practical work and lab skills (ISO3-4). The Graduate Skills Framework entries indicated as 'A' are also assessed in this way.
