This module will provide students with an opportunity to carry out human nutrition investigation developing teamwork through laboratory analysis and use of computers for data handling and preparation of a report.
Outline Of Syllabus
Students work in small teams of 3-4 individuals to carry out a series of specific nutritional investigations on human subjects and produce a joint report. The overall scientific objectives of the experiment are met by the combined efforts of all teams.
Design and execution of a nutritional experiment using human volunteers
Consideration of the ethical implications of such experiments
Statistical analysis of data and interpretation of experimental results
Preparation of a report in a word-processed format.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The module is designed to allow students to learn state of the art research techniques and to apply them in a human intervention trial. They will gain experience in writing a scientific piece of work since the report has to be formatted and structured like a scientific article. The writing of the introduction as a team will also enable them to learn how to structure and conduct a scientific overview in teamwork and how to best allocate and structure the work load.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The students' week by week performance in the laboratory in planning and executing tasks is subject to formative assessment based on brief reports which allow feedback. Laboratory performance is subject to formative assessment on laboratory safety and laboratory test results. Assessment of the final report includes the ability of the student to research the literature (assessed separately), provide a coherent ammount of experimental methods, present results including statistical analyses in appropriate forms and interpret findings in the light of current theories. Peer group appraisal is used to assess teamwork and there is explicit attribution of marks for the quality of the wordprocessing and graphics used in the report.
