CME3123 : Reactor Engineering 2

  • Offered for Year: 2017/18
  • Module Leader(s): Dr Yuen Ling Ng
  • Owning School: Engineering
  • Teaching Location: Singapore
Semester 1 Credit Value: 10
ECTS Credits: 5.0

The aims are: the specification of performance and the design of the reactor unit as a key to the overall design of the process; the application of the basic principles of reactor engineering to the design of reactors involving multiple reactions, catalysis and heterogeneous mass transfer processes, and multiphase mass transport.

Additionally this module provides students with skills to apply chemical engineering principles to bioreactor design. The module provides fundamentals of bioprocess operation and design as well as providing brief information on different types of bioprocesses. The aim is to provide chemical engineers with a basic understanding of the fundamental process engineering problems specific to biochemical processes. Also to provide an insight into the creativity required in bioreactor design.

Outline Of Syllabus

Review of reaction kinetics. Ideal flow reactor design. Multiple reaction analysis. Heat and energy balances in reactors. Thermal effects in reactor design. Catalytic reactions. Heterogeneous catalytic reactors. Multiphase reactor design. Fluidised bed reactors.

Types of bioreactors. Mass and heat transfer in bioreactors. Cell growth and models of growth kinetics. Bioreactor design and scale-up. Instrumentation and control of bioreactors.

Tutorials will demonstrate how lectures can be tied in to solve problems. Students have self-study opportunity from text books, handouts, tutorial sheets and material on Blackboard.

Students will undertake a practical in microbial growth to reinforce their appreciation of cell growth and aseptic work.
