The Newcastle Poetry Competition is now closed for entries. Winners will be notified by the end of April. Due to the cancellation of Fault Lines: Newcastle Poetry Festival 2020 as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 Health Emergency, the winning poets and poems will be announced and made available to read online in May.


1st Prize: £1,000, plus a week-long residency in the Contemporary Poetry Archives at Newcastle University during the Newcastle Poetry Festival, May 13-16, 2020.

2nd Prize: £500

3rd Prize: £250

Five highly commended prizes of £25. 

It costs £6 to enter one poen, and £4 per poem thereafter. 

Deadline: March 3, 2020

The judge - Colette Bryce

Colette Bryce has published four collections with Picador. Her latest, The Whole & Rain-domed Universe (2014), was shortlisted for the Costa, Forward, and Roehampton poetry prizes and winner of a Christopher Ewart-Biggs Award in memory of Seamus Heaney. Selected Poems was the recipient of the Pigott Prize for Irish poetry in 2017. She is an experienced editor, most notably for the journal Poetry London from 2009-13, and will be the incoming editor of Poetry Ireland Review in 2020. A new collection, The M Pages, is forthcoming in spring 2020.
