The inaugural Newcastle Poetry Competition is now open for entries. We welcome submissions written in English from anyone aged 18 or over from anywhere in the world.


1st Prize: £1,000, plus a week-long residency in the Contemporary Poetry Archives at Newcastle University during the Newcastle Poetry Festival, May 1-4, 2019.

2nd Prize: £500

3rd Prize: £250

Five highly commended prizes of £25. 

It costs £6 to enter one poen, and £4 per poem thereafter. 

Deadline: March 26, 2019

Winners will be announced at the Newcastle Poetry Festival 2019, May 1-4. 

The judge - Deryn Rees-Jones

Deryn Rees-Jones' new book of poems, Erato (Seren) and her study Paula Rego: The Art of Story (Thames & Hudson) will be published in 2019. She teaches at the University of Liverpool, where she co-directs the Centre for New and International Writing, and is the editor of Pavilion Poetry.
