'The Crane Wife': CJ Hauser reading and in conversation with Charlie Gilmour

Date/Time: Thursday 21st October 2021, 6.15pm to 7.15pm

Venue: Via YouTube - details to be sent on booking

CJ Hauser wrote viral essay sensation The Crane Wife (The Paris Review, 2019) about calling off her wedding, and studying whooping cranes:

But what I want to tell you is that I left my fiancé when it was almost too late. And I tell people the story of being cheated on because that story is simple. People know how it goes. But it’s harder to tell the story of how I convinced myself I didn’t need what was necessary to survive. How I convinced myself it was my lack of needs that made me worthy of love’.

Her first full length work of nonfiction, The Crane Wife & Other Essays is forthcoming from Viking UK in Spring 2022.

Her novel Family of Origin was published by Doubleday in 2019, and debut novel, The From-Aways, was published by William Morrow in 2014. Work has also appeared in Tin House, Narrative Magazine, The Paris Review, TriQuarterly, Esquire, Third Coast, The Kenyon Review, The Guardian, and The New York Times. She holds an MFA from Brooklyn College and a PhD from Florida State University and teaches creative writing and literature at Colgate University.

Charlie Gilmour is a journalist and author. His writing has appeared in The Guardian, The Sunday Times, The Evening Standard, VICE, and Vogue. Glimour's critically acclaimed memoir, Featherhood, was published in the UK in 2020 by Weidenfeld & Nicolson and has been translated into several languages.

This event is part of NCLA's 'pass the baton' series where one author invites another to talk about their writing - look out for CJ's choice in NCLA's Spring/Summer Events Programme!

Free to attend, and all very welcome.
