Time/Date: 28th January 2018 - 25th February 2018

Newcastle University takes on city rivals Northumbria University looking for its first Stan Calvert Memorial Cup win in five years.

The iconic varsity event started at the end of January with the American Football clash, won by Newcastle University, 26-8. This year’s edition consists of 50 fixtures in 23 different sports, including basketball, Fencing, Skiing, Water Polo and Tennis.

Notable fixtures absent this year are men’s football 1sts/2nds, women’s hockey 1sts and men’s rugby 1sts, due to the congested fixture schedule these university teams have in February. Rowing has also been completely removed, due to Northumbria University not entering any crews. Korfball, a ball sport, with similarities to netball and basketball, has been added to the programme for the very first time. Around half of the fixtures will be contested throughout February, with the bulk of action taking place on Sunday 25 February.

Fraser Kennedy, Performance Sport Manager, Newcastle University, said: “As always there is great excitement and anticipation around this event and can’t wait to see everyone doing their very best for their respective University. Hopefully we can sneak a win against a very strong Northumbria outfit.”

In parallel to the main fixtures, a ‘Fun Run’ has been organised on the Town Moor by both Universities’ Athletic Union Officers. It will take place on Saturday 24 February at 11am, but no points will be allocated to the actual Stan Calvert competition.

Clara Pettitt, Athletic Union Officer, Newcastle University, said: “I am very excited to see the introduction of the Stan Calvert Memorial Fun Run this year and hope that it is a great success, it is a symbolic moment that any student or member of staff can take part in this event for the first time. I look forward to seeing how Team Newcastle performs in the scoring part of the event, I am sure it will be a great battle.”

The cup is in memory of Stan Calvert, who was involved in physical recreation and sport at the University of Newcastle from the early sixties before becoming the first Director of Sport in 1981. Newcastle University has won the tile 14 times, while Northumbria University has won it on nine occasions. The 1999 and 2003 editions ended in a draw.
