NMR Spectroscopy


Our Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facilities allow you to investigate the physical and chemical properties of atoms and molecules. 

These facilities are managed by highly experienced researchers. They are able to observe virtually all NMR-active nuclei and perform the most demanding NMR experiments.

The NMR facility underwent a major refurbishment in 2014 at a cost of over £1.3m and now hosts four NMR spectrometers including a 700 MHz equipped with a nitrogen-cooled cryoprobe. This air-conditioned purpose-built laboratory also contains offices for personnel and additional computing provision. 

Our particular expertise is in many types of multinuclear multiple resonance experiments over a wide temperature range. 

These experiments are applied to studies of novel alkali metal and alkaline earth complexes and the studies of transition metals in polyoxometalates.

1D and 2D solution

The full range of 1D and 2D solution NMR experiments are offered at frequencies of 300, 400, 500 and 700 MHz according to requirements.

As well as the standard 1H and 13C experiments, we are able to observe virtually all NMR active nuclei including 2H, 7Li, 11B, 17O, 19F, 27Al, 29Si, 51V, 95Mo, 103Rh, 113Cd, 119Sn, 183W, 195Pt and 207Pb.


Several 2D experiments are available including COSY, HMBC, HMQC, NOESY and ROESY.

The cryoprobe equipped 700 MHz NMR machine is highly sensitive and is ideal for obtaining high-resolution spectra of compounds where sample quantity is an issue (e.g. natural product work).

1H and 31P DOSY

1H and 31P DOSY experiments are available.

Variable Temperature NMR Spectroscopy

We routinely do Variable Temperature NMR Spectroscopy observing various nuclei at temperatures between -130 and +145 °C.


We offer a consultancy service and are able to give advice regarding suitable experiments and also interpretation and processing of data.


The NMR facility provides services to other departments within the University and commercial customers in industry.

We can ensure competitive rates and a fast turnaround time. All results are provided electronically and are often available within 24 hours of sample receipt.

We currently have four spectrometers in the NMR facility.

Bruker Avance III HD 700 MHz

This spectrometer is equipped with a 24 position autosample changer and a triple-resonance nitrogen cooled cryoprobe prodigyTM.

The probe is optimised for observation of 1H/19F with enhanced sensitivity for 13C plus observation or decoupling of 15N. This probe is ideal for COSY, EXSY, NOESY, ROESY, HSQC, HMBC, TOCSY, DOSY and has a temperature range of 0 to +80 °C.

We also have a 5mm broadband multinuclear (BBO) probe for observation of nuclei in frequency range 109Ag to 31P. This machine can decouple or observe 1H or 19F and has a temperature range of +/- 135 °C

Bruker Avance III HD 500 MHz

This is equipped with a 24 position autosample changer and a range of 5-10 mm probes covering virtually all NMR-active nuclei.

A triple-resonance probe on this machine allows us to observe the spectra of 13C and many other nuclei with simultaneous decoupling of 31P and 1H.

This instrument is used by specially trained researchers for a wide range of studies in synthetic, mechanistic and catalytic chemistry, there being a special interest in dynamic systems.

Bruker Avance II 400 MHz

Equipped with a 60 position autosample changer and a 5mm auto-tuning broadband probe.

This machine is automated using Topspin software and is available to all researchers on a walk-up basis

Bruker Avance III 300 MHz

Equipped with a 60 position autosampler and a broadband multinuclear 5mm auto-tuning probe.

This machine is automated to achieve high sample throughput and is available to all trained researchers on a walk-up basis.

The NMR Facility is managed by Dr Corinne Wills. Corinne has experience of running a wide range of samples and has a background in inorganic chemistry.

Corinne’s particular expertise is in running multinuclear NMR experiments and has experience handling extremely air-sensitive samples.

Professor William McFarlane
Emeritus Professor

Now formally retired, Professor McFarlane is still very much involved in the NMR facility at Newcastle University and provides a consultancy service.

William has over 40 years’ experience at the forefront of NMR spectroscopy and has published almost 300 papers.
