Watching Ink Dry

Chemistry Seminar Series - Professor Colin Bain, Durham University

Date/Time: Tuesday 29 January 2019, 14:00 - 15:00

Venue: Bedson Building Room 2.76

Abstract

Watching ink dry sounds like a dull and pointless endeavour. Understanding how droplets dry on surfaces is, however, central to a wide range of applications, including:

  • inkjet printing
  • crop spraying
  • digital manufacturing of electronic devices or displays

The drying process is remarkably complex due to the interplay of chemistry, physics and fluid mechanics.

This talk will use high-speed imaging and interferometry to reveal the intricacy – and beauty – of drying droplets.

It will discuss how this knowledge can be used to design functional surfaces and thin films.
