Molecular Microbiology

We conduct research related to the metabolism and biochemistry of terrestrial and marine microbes.

Our researchers study fundamental topics related to the metabolism and biochemistry of terrestrial and marine microbes, including deep sea microbiology. Our research includes the study and elucidation of natural product biosynthetic pathways, for example the biosynthesis of antimicrobial compounds and production of microalgae and cyanobacteria biotoxins.

Our staff also examine the fundamental molecular mechanisms by which microbes successfully exploit their environment. This includes understanding the biochemistry of how microbes degrade and assimilate complex carbohydrates in a range of challenging environments, mechanisms underpinning metal homeostasis and stress responses, and how microbes transport molecules across cell membranes.
