My research aims to assess the use of faecal microbial profiling as a method to identify low birthweight pigs able to exhibit compensatory growth. They are likely to benefit from intervention strategies from those whose growth remains stunted, irrespective of farmer’s best efforts.

Next Generation Sequencing of the V4 region of the 16s rRNA gene is being used to sequence the microbiota communities associated with the pig gastrointestinal tract. The main benefits of this research include:

  • increasing our understanding of the biology of the low birthweight pig
  • improving our understanding of the microbiota and its importance in relation to pig gut health, welfare and performance.

My supervisor is Professor Ilias Kyriazakis.
