Earth, Ocean and Planetary Sciences Research
Earth, Ocean and Planetary Sciences Research

Our Research
Our group is the focal point for Earth, Ocean and Planetary Sciences (EOPS) at Newcastle.
Two broad themes
EOPS staff use a range of approaches to carry out research in two broad, overlapping areas:
Our projects are typically multidisciplinary.
Teaching
We teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, across a multitude of degree courses.
Excellent facilities
We take advantage of excellent facilities. They allow us to combine cutting-edge components of the long established disciplines of:
- geology
- biology
- chemistry
Published research
Our published research is making an impact with policymakers across the globe and showcasing our many discoveries. We also feature regularly in the news.

Themes
We conduct significant research under two broad themes. These are Energy and Natural Resources, and Biogeochemistry and the Environment.
-
Energy and Natural Resources
Our research addresses many resources needed to sustain a growing global population. We look to make sure they have the least impact on the environment and sustainability.
Fossil fuels
We recognise fossil fuels are important in the transition to a post-carbon economy. They are vital raw materials. Nitrogen fertilizers allowed the global population to triple since the Second World War.
Geothermal energy
We are active in geothermal energy. We use knowledge from the petroleum sector to develop this crucial source of heat and power. It's important because it's zero carbon and constant.
Soil processes
Our research on soil processes addresses carbon capture as well as crop nutrition. We look at fundamental science influencing stability of organic matter in soils/sediments.
-
Biogeochemistry and the Environment
We specialise in understanding the links between microbes, minerals, water and the atmosphere. This is from the perspective of the processes that link these systems on land and in the ocean.
Their impact on plant, animal and human life takes place at a range of scales – from molecular to global.
Investigating soils, sediments and rocks
We investigate processes that take place in soils, sediments and rocks. We look from the surface to the depths that human activity exploits for:
• carbon capture
• energy
• water resourcesOrganic pollutants
At the surface, we address the fate of organic pollutants in the environment and how:
• they change through bioremediation
• we can track them using novel analytical methods, such as biosensors
• biological activity within a soil enables crop growthOur oceans
In the oceans, we investigate fundamental processes of gas exchange with the atmosphere. This controls global warming, in the context of global ocean circulation.
Planetary science
We are involved in the ongoing scientific exploration of Mars linked to the ExoMars programme, where we investigate Martian soil, gases and ice.
Projects
We're engaged in a vast array of projects that embrace and span our research themes. We're making major discoveries that are helping to provide sustainable energy for the future while protecting the planet.
