Project title

Using spatially explicit soil mapping and modelling to understand and mitigate nitrate leaching in an agricultural catchment

Project description

In this research, we aim to:

  • incorporate high-resolution soil sensing, intelligent sampling designs and point observations to design a better monitoring system for soil nitrate and leaching events across a small but diverse agricultural catchment
  • update soil nitrate leaching models to integrate the new information and develop methodologies suitable for non-chalk geological formations
  • identify possible mitigation strategies to reduce nitrate losses without compromising crop production

In the first year of study, we monitored 24 locations using porous ceramic cups to collect water samples from the soil below root zone. On the basis of initial results of nitrate concentration in soil water, soil characteristic and depth to the bedrock we are repeating targeted monitoring in the second year of this research.

Interests

Soil and environmental science, precision agriculture
