Staff Profile

Dr Stephen MacKenzie

Research Associate

Background

Broadly, my research is focused on using quantitative modelling techniques to assist decision-making and drive improvements to the sustainability of food production systems. I am currently associated as a postdoctoral researcher with both the Geography department at Trinity College Dublin and the Animal Sciences research group within the School of Natural Sciences at Newcastle University. My primary role is currently on the SHARECITY project based in Dublin where I am leading efforts with project partners to co-design a toolkit which can effectively be quantify the sustainability impact and potential of urban food sharing initiatives. The focus of my work with Newcastle is the use of quantitative modelling and in particular, life cycle assessment as a tool to improve the sustainability of modern livestock production systems. I currently co-supervise two PhD students on their projects modelling the implications of genetic change and alternative management strategies respectively for the sustainability of pig production systems.
