Our Facilities

Scientist in laboratoryNESCI’s partners have invested heavily in new laboratories and other facilities in recent years.

Our scientists are currently based in state-of-the art labs in three centres:

  • The Centre for Life in Newcastle hosts a number of teams working on embryonic, germline and adult stem cells. Our Bio-Manufacturing Facility, FACS facility and management team are also based here.
  • Durham University's Science Park hosts the teams who work at the Schools of Chemistry and Biological Sciences on a range of adult stem cells and enabling technologies.
  • Newcastle University's Medical School hosts teams working on cancer stem cells and other disease-specific stem cells.

Other Facilities

The 'Newcastle Cellular Therapies Facility' has been specially built, with the support of One North East, to give us the capacity to grow stem cells to the quality needed for them to be put into people.

We have a number of other specialist facilities, including an extensive Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) facility.

NESCI Researchers also make use of the world-class facilities available at Newcastle and Durham Universities.

Newcastle University scientific facilities include imaging methods such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission topography (PET) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Durham University scientific facilities include genomic (DNA sequencing) and proteomic technologies.
