Background
Introduction
Past - Group Lead Future Mobility
The Future Mobility Group combines the expertise of the academics and researchers within the School of Engineering to bring together our multimodal multidisciplinary research portfolio. Our expertise spans from transport technology and engineering-related activities to user behaviour analysis, the environment and logistics. Our aim is to promote Newcastle as Europe's leading Mobility University that bridges the gap between technology, engineering research and user-centred behavioural research.
Professor of Rail Systems Engineering, School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering, Newcastle University since 2005 and Director of Newcastle Centre for Rail Research (NewRail) since 2004. From 2000 to 2004 he was Director of the Advanced Railway Research Centre (ARRC) at Sheffield University. Main research interests include the development and application of lightweight materials for rail vehicles and crashworthy composite structures. In 2009 he received the Institute of Mechanical Engineers Safety Award and the Alfred Rosling Bennett/Charles S Lake Award for his work on aluminium weld unzipping.
He has been actively involved in UIC’s International Rail Research since 2011 and was elected Vice-Chairman of the Board in March 2017. His role focuses on Area 03 which is the Global Research and Innovation Awards. The UIC IRRB took initiative to establish these new UIC Innovation Awards following the objectives set out in its ambitious work programme adopted on December the 9th 2011.
Every two years, UIC holds these awards to support and promote:
- the development of theoretical, experimental and applied research in the railway sector;
- the development of international cooperation in the field of rail research and innovation;
- the promotion and attraction of leading experts from different countries, research institutes, universities, railway operators, infrastructure managers, railway suppliers, passenger transport agencies, government bodies in charge of transport and individual researchers to address the most important problems and challenges of modern railways.
He has involved in the European Rail Research Advisory Council (ERRAC) since 2008. He has contributed extensively including the preparation of ERRAC proposals such as ERRAC Roadmaps, FOSTER RAIL and more recently SETRIS.
On January 2015 he was elected President of the European Conference of Transport Research Institutes (ECTRI) – January 2015 to January 2017. In December 2016 he was re-elected President for his final term to January 2019. The European Conference of Transport Research Institute’s members are the major transport research institutes from 19 European countries, accounting for more than 4000 European scientific and research staff in the field of transport.
In 2014 -2017 he was honoured by the China High End Foreign Experts Programme and in 2016 he was awarded 100 Talents from Fujian Province, both for high rail research activities.

Current Work
The aim of SETRIS is to deliver a cohesive and coordinated approach to research and innovation strategies for all transport modes in Europe.
To fulfil the aim of SETRIS, the following objectives are envisaged:
1. To identify synergies between the transport European Technology Platforms (ETPs) strategic and research and innovation agendas (SRIAs) and between these and relevant national platforms in Member States and associated countries;
2. To review and update the existing SRIAs for each of the transport ETPs within a multi-modal and integrated transport system framework;
3. To benchmark past and present research initiatives affecting the achievement of integrated transport SRIAs and market uptake;
4. To define comprehensive, credible and realistic implementation plans for each SRIAs in a coordinated framework of running ETPs;
5. To support, shape and contribute to future Transport Research Arena (TRA) events leading to a significant increment in the prominence of transport research and innovation activities.
