SUSTRUM was a collaborative research and development project supported by the UK’s Technology Strategy Board. Its objective was to develop and apply new structural materials that had been derived from waste streams. By re-engineering waste materials that might otherwise have ended-up in land-fill back into structurally-useful products, SUSTRUM aimed to provide sustainable and cost-effective alternatives to existing virgin commodities. Recycled polymers, woods, carpets, and other industrial and household waste streams were all investigated within the project. The photo shows one of the applications developed – a pallet produced from waste carpet, recycled polymer granules and recycled wood chips. Another application was ecological fencing that safely and naturally excludes endangered newts from potentially dangerous areas such as railway lines.

The SUSTRUM consortium consisted of seven partners encompassing material suppliers, innovators and manufacturers, as well as end-users from the packaging and building sectors.
