Newcastle University Academic Track Fellowships NUAcT

Dr David Seifert

My name is David Seifert and I joined Newcastle University in September 2019 as a NUAcT Fellow in pure mathematics. Before coming to Newcastle I was at the University of Oxford, most recently as a fellow of St John’s College and before that as a student at Hertford and Balliol Colleges. I grew up in Berlin, a city I still take every opportunity to visit.

My research interests lie in an area of mathematics called functional analysis. I am particularly interested in families of linear operators which describe the solutions of certain differential equations. My work combines various beautiful areas of pure mathematics but it also has important applications, for example in the study of energy decay of damped waves.

I was drawn to Newcastle University as much for its proud tradition in functional analysis as for its sense of duty to the local community and its commitment to widening participation. The NUAcT Fellowship offers a wonderful opportunity for me to further establish myself as an independent researcher and to explore new directions for my research, both within pure mathematics and beyond. I also look forward to contributing where I can to the university’s impressive range of outreach initiatives.
