6th Congregation Shines Spotlight on Achievement and Dedication of NUMed Students

Academic achievements of Malaysia’s medical students were celebrated at the Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia’s (NUMed) 6th Congregation ceremony on 21st July 2019. A total of 133 students received their scrolls during this auspicious event, with 110 of them from the university’s Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, and five from its BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences programme.

Held at the Persada Convention Centre, the event was presided over by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Newcastle University, Prof. David Burn.

While delivering the congregation address, Prof. Burn urged the students to take the responsibility to share and spread the learnings that they are taking away with them from the university.

“Graduates today are graduating from NUMed, which is an integral part of Newcastle University, one of the UK’s greatest civic, research-intensive universities. They exist for the public benefit to advance education, learning, and research.”

“The need for highly educated and skilled healthcare workers is increasing every year. You are entering the medical profession at a very important time for our nation. The knowledge and skills you have obtained will now be put into practice,” highlighted Prof. Burn.

In addition, the ceremony included a presentation of accomplished student awards honoring academic, campus-wide, and personal success of NUMed students. The awards include the Vice Chancellor’s Merit Award, TM Teoh Prize Award, Walton Prize, and Educity Best Student Award.

The ceremony also featured the conferment of Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences to a total of 17 students.

NUMed, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, is the first fully owned international branch campus in Malaysia that offers undergraduate degrees in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences as well as opportunities for postgraduate studies from a UK university. NUMed draws on the legacy of Newcastle University, UK, that can trace its roots back to the early 19th century.

The university is internationally renowned for being one the best British universities for medicine, offering world-class medical education to students from more than 120 countries. Currently, it is placed fifth in the UK by The Guardian University Guide 2019 and in the top 125 (Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health category) by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2018, among others. It also received a 95% Overall Student Satisfaction Score according to the National Student Survey 2017 (subjects allied to medical category).
