This custom-built 13-acre (5.3-hectare) campus has clinical studies that are centred in Hospital Sultan Ismail and other government hospitals and community clinics in and around Johor Bahru.

Starting from a foundation course, NUMed has degree programmes in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences (BMS). Known for its solid research work, the Newcastle University in the UK offers high-quality teaching and a full-on learning experience

Its research opportunities are available to all its students.

Part of the prestigious Russell Group of educators, Newcastle University, UK is consistently ranked among the top 20 in the UK for its research work and for its enriching student experience.

This excellence is certainly replicated here at its Malaysian campus.

Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences

NUMed’s Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences programme offers a pre-undergraduate study for Malaysian and international students who wish to study medicine, biological or biomedical sciences, or science at undergraduate level.

Once graduating from this course, the student can continue on locally at NUMed, opt to proceed in the UK at Newcastle University, or at another Malaysian higher education institution, depending on the final grades.

The programme builds the student’s study skills, enabling them to enter a degree-level education at any higher education institution, while introducing them to the practical experience of British university teaching methods.

The foundation programme also trains students to be competent in the English language and helps them develop confidence in communicating and learning in that language.

It also gives students the confidence to undertake self-evaluation, which helps them identify their additional needs.

The foundation programme has two intakes every year, in May and September.

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

This fully integrated five-year undergraduate medical course in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in NUMed is identical to the one taught in Newcastle University, UK.

It provides a general medical education suitable for all types of doctors, and forms a springboard for career specialisations later in their careers.

Once they graduate, students would be fit to practise as doctors, following the professional standards laid out by the UK General Medical Council and the Malaysian Medical Council.

With this programme Newcastle University aims to deliver an educational experience that covers sufficient range, depth and rigour to students in Malaysia. They would acquire the knowledge, understanding, practical skills, competencies and professional attitude required for them to experience the clinical practice first-hand, as a pre-registration house officer.

From there on, they would be able to build a sturdy career for their future.

The Medicine and Surgery MBBS Honours programme is delivered at the NUMed campus and the course is equivalent to the one delivered at Newcastle University UK’s Medical School, and once the students graduate, they are awarded the degrees Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) by Newcastle University, UK.

Although students can opt to complete five years of the programme in Malaysia, there are opportunities during the second and fourth year in course to study for some time at the university’s Medical School in the UK.

Students also have the opportunity of studying for an extra year in the UK for an intercalated research qualification at either the Bachelors or Masters level. NUMed only has one intake each year, in September.

Bachelor of Sciences (Honours) in Biomedical Sciences

NUMed’s BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences is a 2+1 programme with Newcastle University in the UK.

This course teaches a range of subjects that are related to medicine, including the study of key areas like biochemistry, genetics, physiology, microbiology, immunology and pharmacology.

This provides a multidisciplinary approach of understanding how the human body functions in health and disease.

The programme is split into two parts: First is a two-academic year course conducted locally in NUMed, Johor, which is similar to the one taught on the main campus in the UK.

The second is a one-academic year course at the UK campus, enriched with research-led teaching and comes with an intensive research project in one of the highly regarded research institutes in Newcastle University Medical School.

The course is equivalent to the one delivered in the UK campus and culminates in a BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences degree award by Newcastle University, UK upon successful completion of the programme. NUMed has only one intake each year in September.

Research-based excellence

In 2015 NUMed began a new chapter as it follows the and since then, with the focus depending on the need and opportunity that arises in Malaysia, and this is further dependent upon international funding and NUMed research faculty expertise.

Its research is focused upon three themes of Medical Education, Applied Health Research and Cancer.

NUMed’s research team now has 10 researchers from the UK and Malaysia, working together across different disciplines to produce projects with impact to address local needs. They also collaborate with researchers from other higher education institutions and health care facilities locally and across the world.

The work with these local and foreign collaborators is largely aimed at tackling the United Nations Sustainability Goal Challenges, facilitating the exchange of people, ideas, practice and technology, which has allowed solutions to common problems to be found cost effectively and efficiently.

NUMed has hosted PhD students and postdocs from the UK and Malaysia and aims to host more researchers in the near future.
