EduCity Educators Conference 2019

More than 150 higher education leaders from both the public and private sectors gathered for the 2nd EduCity Educators Conference at Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) on 6 September 2019. The event convened higher education experts, educators, professional support staff and students with an aim to foster networking collaboration among the three organising UK universities, i.e. NUMed, University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM), and University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM), as well as the external campuses of other universities in the country.

The event was graced by Yang Berusaha Dr. Zubaidah Binti Aman, Director of the Private Higher Education Governance Division, Ministry of Education, as well as Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saiful Bahri Yusoff from the Medical Education Department of Universiti Sains Malaysia, who presented keynote speeches.

With the theme “Support in Education”, the conference focused primarily on pastoral, academic, employability, and study skills support for students, as well as research, training, and wellbeing support for staff.

“EduCity Educators Conference promotes information sharing and collaboration among colleagues from all participating institutions, allowing them to exchange ideas and best practices. We hope to encourage delegates taking new approaches in teaching and learning,” said Dr. Pamela Knight, one of the lead organisers from NUMed.

“In a survey after the conference, over 95% of the delegates responded ‘yes’ to the question on whether they learnt ‘actionable information that would help them in their work life’. This affirms our belief that such events are vital in promoting staff development as well as improving quality in educational research, teaching, and student support,” she added.

In addressing some of the latest developments in the education industry, the daylong conference consisted of keynote speeches, workshops, and oral presentation sessions featuring timely and relevant topics on holistic student support, private higher education, and innovation in teaching and learning, among others.

The conference ended on a high note with a lively Question & Answer session hosted by Prof. Dr. Sakina Sofia Baharom, Director of Operations, EduCity Iskandar Malaysia, that was participated by students from NUMed, UoRM, and UoSM, followed by high tea and a networking session at the* EduCity Sports Complex.
