Growth and Discovery in the UK: NUMed’s Summer Placement Programme

Summer breaks aren’t just a time of rest and relaxation; they are also the perfect chance for growth and exploration – to try out new experiences, expand our horizons, and enhance ourselves. Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia’s (NUMed) Summer Placement programme provides just that by presenting its students with the opportunity to participate in a research project overseas at Newcastle University, UK.

Newcastle University, UK, is an established world-class centre of research excellence. Ranked eighth in England for combined Medical Units of Assessment in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, the prestigious university has been at the forefront of a multitude of groundbreaking discoveries, contributing significant advancements in the research areas of ageing, cell and molecular biosciences, stem cells and regenerative medicine, cancer and many more.

Consequently, under the Summer Placement programme, NUMed students will have the invaluable opportunity to potentially contribute to these innovative world-changing projects while significantly enhancing their research skills and knowledge via first-hand exposure to the fundamentals of research. Concurrently, they learn to develop problem-solving skills and engage in enquiry-based learning.

The Summer Placement programme usually takes place between Stages 2 and 3 of the students’ degree programme. During this time, the students are given a unique opportunity to spend six to eight weeks involved in a supervised research project in the UK with access to Newcastle University’s state-of-the-art research facilities and distinguished experts. As a plus, students may be able to secure funding for their UK trip and by applying for Newcastle University’s Research Scholarships and Expeditions schemes.

According to NUMed student Grace Ting, the Summer Placement programme provided her with tremendous insight into the various processes of research. In her research project with Newcastle University’s School of Dental Services, Ting experimented with rats’ dental pulp cells and studied the expression of CaSR (Calcium-sensing receptor) during the development of these cells.

“I now understand how much dedication it takes to complete a research project. I am grateful for this opportunity!” she said.

NUMed’s Summer Placement programme isn’t just all academics, and students often have a fantastic time enjoying the UK’s sights, people, culture, and lifestyle. It’s a great opportunity for them to learn independent living while also immersing themselves in an exciting new environment.

“I had a great time staying in Newcastle. It’s a vibrant and fun city with many interesting places to explore and a variety of food options,” Grace stated. The NUMed student fondly remembers her time in Newcastle, UK, picnicking at Leazes Park with friends, shopping at the four-storey Primark for hours, and eating a guilty amount of cupcakes and chocolates at the Sunday morning market at Quayside.

NUMed offers undergraduate degrees in Medicine (MBBS) and Biomedical Sciences (BSc) as well as opportunities for postgraduate studies. Other than the Summer Placement programme, the university also offers students several paths to study in the UK. Among others, NUMed’s MBBS students have the option to study in the UK during their fourth year. Similarly, its BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences is a 2+1 programme where students spend their last year engaged in an intensive research project in the UK. All the programmes of study lead to the award of the same degrees as those studied at the parent campus in the UK.
