Inspiring the Next Generation of Medical Professionals

The field of healthcare is growing bigger and stronger everyday worldwide, as medical advances open the doors to solving more medical problems and addressing new challenges.

Medical professionals are often at the forefront of tackling global issues in healthcare, playing increasingly important roles in all aspects.

As universal healthcare issues become more widespread, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and non-communicable diseases like cancer, there is an ever-greater need for healthcare professionals.

With such demand, there’s never been a more promising area for students today than medicine. In Malaysia, one university is at the forefront of producing practice-ready graduates, positively contributing to the health of society: Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed).

Bringing the best of Newcastle University to Malaysian shores, NUMed offers a Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences programme alongside its acclaimed undergraduate degrees in medicine and biomedical sciences, as well as opportunities for postgraduate study.

The Foundation programme is a 12-month pre-undergraduate programme for Malaysian students intending to pursue medicine, biological or biomedical sciences, or science at undergraduate level. Subsequently, those who successfully complete this programme as required will be offered a place on either the university’s Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme (subject to interview) or 2+1 BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences programme.

Equivalent to its UK counterpart, NUMed’s MBBS programme is recognised by both the General Medical Council, UK, and Malaysian Medical Council. While all five years of the programme are delivered in Malaysia, students will have opportunities to study up to 8 weeks at Newcastle University in the UK during their fourth year, or opt for an extra year in the UK for an intercalated research qualification at either Bachelors or Masters level.

The 2+1 BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences programme, on the other hand, covers a diverse study of key areas such as biochemistry, genetics, physiology, microbiology, immunology and pharmacology. The first two years of the programme are conducted at the Malaysia campus and students will complete their third year at the UK campus, during which students will be placed at one of the highly regarded research institutes at Newcastle University for research-led teaching and an intensive research project.

All programmes offered at NUMed are identical to those offered at Newcastle University, UK, and lead to the award of the same qualifications, but at significantly reduced costs.

In obtaining a solid education, students will also benefit from the university’s vast resources and best practices, including a high-calibre faculty. As a member of the prestigious Russell Group, Newcastle University comprises a world-leading collaboration of research scientists, medical doctors and teaching professionals. As such, students are able to reap the advantages of being taught and guided by a highly accomplished and experienced international faculty. Furthermore, NUMed’s faculty members are all required to obtain a Diploma in Medical Education, thus ensuring that they are well-equipped to optimally prepare aspiring healthcare professionals for their future careers.

The university also adopts innovative teaching methods, including student-centred learning and flip classroom approaches to facilitate the holistic development of its students while also presenting opportunities for them to hone their critical thinking, creativity and confidence in order for them to be well-rounded healthcare professionals upon graduation.

Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia is accepting applications for its September intake for Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences, BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences (BMS), Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
