NUMed Celebrates 10 Years of Excellence in Medical Education

Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) commemorated 10 years of delivering educational excellence in the fields of medicine and biomedicine on 21 September 2019. More than 350 guests including the university’s faculty, staff, alumni, and students gathered to join in the celebrations that day.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Richard Davies, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Global of Newcastle University, UK, noted that the set up of NUMed in Malaysia provides Newcastle University a new perspective to carry forward their vision to make a difference in the world.

“The real strength of NUMed lies in the talented and passionate people of the university with shared affinity, ambition, and dedication,” he highlighted.

He went on to reminisce about the early days, when there were only 20 students, and marvelled at how much the university has progressed since, with over 750 students in the present day.

“The university has grown over the years and is now fast gaining traction as a provider of top-notch medical education in the region, producing capable graduates who are prepared to change the face of medicine for the better,” he added.

The opening ceremony of the event was also graced by the presence of YBhg Datuk Ir Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir, Director-General of the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, Sarah Deverall, Director of British Council, and Datuk Ir. Khairil Anwar Bin Ahmad, President and CEO of Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB).

YBHg Datuk Ir Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir expressed her whole-hearted congratulations to NUMed for reaching this important milestone.

“As the first university to set up here in EduCity in 2009, NUMed has contributed significantly to Malaysia and the region as a whole. It is the expectation that this great institution will continue to improve on the laurels that have so far been achieved,” she urged.

The joyous 10th anniversary celebration featured an educational forum titled “Direction of Undergraduate Medical Education Training in Malaysia: Are We Producing the Right Calibre of Graduates?” The forum was helmed by Prof. Datuk Paras Doshi, Prof. Reginald Jordan, and Prof. Edmund Ong, as a unique platform for the leaders of medical education in Malaysia to exchange views with their counterparts.

The day's agenda also included a press conference with NUMed leadership including Prof. Chris Baldwin, CEO & Provost of NUMed and Prof. Davies.

During the press conference, Prof. Baldwin expounded on what he felt were the primary elements of NUMed’s success: the excellence of all of its staff, both academic and professional; the cooperation among NUMed, Newcastle UK, and NUMed’s partners in Malaysia; and the openness and collegiality of the NUMed community.

“We have a truly international community here at NUMed, and we are incredibly humbled that so many people are here with us to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We are very excited to see what the future holds as we continue to develop our role in medical education in Malaysia and across the world,” he highlighted.

Prof. Davies noted that he has been very happy to be part of NUMed since its inception and has no doubt that the best is yet to come.

“We couldn’t be more delighted with the 10th anniversary celebration. The success of the day is evidence of the huge amount of hard work that’s gone into the university from day one, and I am very proud to be part of such a momentous occasion.”

To round off the day, guests had the opportunity to relive NUMed’s 10-year journey through a photo competition display session, which sought to capture the essence of being at NUMed.
