NUMed Marks World Mental Health Day with Students & Staff

In conjunction with World Mental Health Day, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) held several workshops, exhibitions, and interactive talk sessions from 7th to 11th October 2019, which were aimed at increasing awareness of mental health problems and wellbeing among the NUMed community and beyond.

The five-day event, featuring the theme Suicide Prevention, revolved around the Five Ways to Wellbeing – Take Notice, Connect, Be Active, Keep Learning, and Give – as well as suicide prevention awareness.

Photography, art and poetry, and suicide prevention workshops as well as yoga, Zumba, and open mic sessions were among the activities available. As part of the initiative, students and staff of NUMed wore green, the international colour symbol for mental health awareness, throughout the event.

Dr. Ma Brenda Pancho, an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Student Support at the university, said, “Globally, around 450 million people suffer from poor mental health, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide. Against this backdrop, reports have shown that mental health disorders are also unfortunately on the rise in Malaysia.

“As the top UK medical education provider in Malaysia, we are committed to spreading awareness about how to promote wellbeing and also awareness about suicide prevention to address mental health problems in our wider community, and contributing to decreasing the stigma associated with these health problems.

“We believe that providing education about forming positive mental health practices is an integral part of NUMed students’ education,” she added.
