NUMed’s Class of 2020 Graduates Against All Odds in 7th Congregation

Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) makes history by celebrating its 7th  Congregation digitally. As an effort of adhering to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) obliged under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO), NUMed trades their traditional physical gathering with a virtual event attended by all NUMedians from the safety of their homes.

On October 20th, 2020, the decorated graduands were appreciated through pre-recorded congratulatory messages from NUMed’s senior management, academic force and education partners. Whether they lectured or handled paperwork, each NUMed staff played a part in the students’ journey from MedEd to mortarboard, albeit a metaphorical one. Apart from that, the graduands themselves also recited the oath, pledging their commitment to the code of good medical practice through pre-recorded videos.

It is no question that 2020 has been a year like no other. Clinicals and lab learning had to be canceled, and lectures had to be conducted online. Medical students are faced with the ironic adversity of learning about healthcare digitally in the midst of a global pandemic. Nonetheless, the changes that the fifth year Medicine & Surgery (MBBS) and Biomedical Sciences (BMS) warriors had to adapt to does not reduce the significance of their achievements by any means. If anything, it has made their accomplishments seem even more impressive.

As aptly put by Prof. Chris Baldwin, the Provost and Chief Executive Officer,

“To be able to graduate from medical school during a global pandemic is no slight ordeal, and I would like to convey my heartiest congratulations for pulling off such a remarkable feat. I applaud you for being adaptable and staying resilient in the face of adversity, and I’m confident that the tenacity developed during hardship would serve you well in your future endeavors as healthcare providers.”

“With all that is going on in the world, the need for skilled and highly educated medical professionals have increased tenfold. Now is the most crucial time for all of you to enter into the healthcare industry and contribute to society.” asserts Ms. Premila Nair, the Chief Operating Officer and Head of Administration.

Established in 2009, NUMed is the first fully owned international branch campus in Malaysia that offers undergraduate degrees in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences as well as opportunities for postgraduate studies from a UK university. NUMed draws on the legacy of Newcastle University, UK, that can trace its roots back to the early 19th century.

NUMed upholds a high standard in academic excellence, and is internationally renowned for being one the best British universities for medicine, offering world-class medical education to students from more than 120 countries. NUMed strives to produce competent medical practitioners and researchers, even during unprecedented times. Currently, it is placed fifth in the UK by The Guardian University Guide 2019 and in the top 125 (Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health category) by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2018, among others. It also received a 95% Overall Student Satisfaction Score according to the National Student Survey 2017 (subjects allied to medical category).
