Open access funds

Funds may be available for gold open access for publications acknowledging RCUK or COAF funding.

Publisher agreements

Publisher agreements cover the full cost of open access for eligible publications (conditions apply). There will be no charge when making publications open access through these agreements.

British Psychological Society (members)

Graduate and Chartered members of the British Psychological Society who are corresponding authors of articles published in BPS journals can make these open access at no extra cost. The cost of this is being subsidised by the society as part of a two year trial that began in September 2017.

To take advantage of this offer authors should select "British Psychological Society" as the funder when prompted on the Wiley submission system.

Springer

The Springer open access agreement for UK authors allows corresponding authors from Newcastle University to publish Gold open access in eligible Springer subscription journals at no extra cost.

The scheme applies to original papers, review papers, brief communications and continuing education papers.

Instructions for corresponding authors:

  1. When your paper is accepted, Springer will direct you to a MyPublication form
  2. Agree to the open access terms, including the CC BY licence.
  3. Declare your affiliation with Newcastle University. We recommend using your Newcastle University e-mail address to help the university and Springer verify your eligibility.
  4. Once verified, your paper will become open access on publication

Publisher discounts

With the publishers below authors will receive a discount on the APC, but will need funds to pay the remainder of the charges.

De Gruyter

De Gruyter open access institutional membership grants corresponding authors from Newcastle University a 20% discount on APCs for both hybrid and pure open access journals for articles accepted after 1 January 2019.

The publisher will apply the discount to eligible publications automatically.

MDPI

Newcastle University participate in the MDPI Institutional Open Access Program, granting a 10% discount on the standard open access fee.

Authors are prompted in the last step of submission to determine if they are eligible for discounts under the open access program. The discount will be applied automatically where authors use their Newcastle University email address.

Nucleic Acids Research

Newcastle University have institutional membership with Nucleic Acids Research granting a substantial discount on publication charges. Authors at member institutions pay only £710, receiving a 50% discount compared to the non-member institution rate of £1420.

The publisher will apply the discount automatically for corresponding authors affiliated with Newcastle University.

Sage

Corresponding authors from Newcastle University pay a discounted APC of £200 (plus VAT) when publishing a Gold open access article in a journal which is part of the SAGE Choice programme.

Corresponding authors should indicate that they are entitled to this discount on the SAGE Choice Open Access Contributor Form by entering 'JISC2019' in the 'University/Institution Account Code' field. SAGE will then send authors an invoice for the discounted APC.

Taylor and Francis

The Taylor and Francis NESLi APC allowance scheme provides Newcastle University with a limited number of vouchers that can be redeemed for a 75% discount on the standard APC in most Open Select journals. Please note authors will need funds to pay the remaining 25% of the APC.

Instructions for corresponding authors:

  1. On acceptance, email apc@tandf.co.uk with details of your name, institutional affiliation, journal name and article title and request that the NESLi APC discount is applied to the Open Select fee.
  2. Once verified and subject to voucher availability, a 75% discount will be applied to the standard journal APC .
  3. Your article will be open access on publication.

Institutional Prepaid Accounts (RCUK-funded authors only)

For papers within the scope of the RCUK open access policy, the open access fees can be paid directly from university accounts (subject to available funds). Please follow the instructions for the publisher of your chosen journal.

BioMed Central

The BioMed Central prepayment scheme allows RCUK-funded authors to have their article publishing charge paid from our institutional account. This also grants a 10% discount on the APC for RCUK-funded articles in all BMC Journals.

Instructions for corresponding authors:

  1. Before submitting your article apply for RCUK open access funding
  2. If the application is approved, we will email you our BMC institutional account number
  3. When submitting your manuscript, enter this account number in the payment section
  4. We'll receive notification of the request from BMC and will authorise payment on acceptance (subject to available funds)
  5. The article will be published as open access with a CC-BY licence as required by the RCUK

Elsevier

The Elsevier UK Prepaid Open Access Plan allows corresponding authors of RCUK-funded papers to have open access charges paid from our institutional account and grants a 10% discount on the fee.

To be eligible, the corresponding author must be an employee of Newcastle University and the article must acknowledge RCUK funding (including the grant number). Please note: Cell Press and Lancet titles are not included in this plan.

Instructions for corresponding authors:

  1. When your article is accepted apply for RCUK open access funding
  2. If funding is approved, request open access via the Elsevier Rights and Access form.
  3. In the 'funding body information' section select "Jisc-UK Prepaid" to refer the charges to the university account.
  4. We'll authorise payment and the article will be published open access with a CC-BY licence as required by the RCUK.

IEEE

The IEEE prepayment scheme allows RCUK-funded authors to have their article publishing charge paid from our institutional account. This also grants a 25% discount on the standard APC for RCUK-funded articles in all IEEE journals with a paid open access option.

  1. On acceptance, apply for RCUK open access funding
  2. Subject to approval and available funds we will contact IEEE to authorise payment from our institutional account
  3. The article will be published as open access with a CC-BY licence as required by the RCUK

Oxford University Press

The OUP prepayment scheme allows RCUK-funded authors to have their Oxford Open charges paid from our institutional account.

Instructions for corresponding authors:

  1. On acceptance, apply for RCUK open access funding. We recommend waiting for approval before placing an Oxford Open order as if declined, charges will be passed to the authors.
  2. Once funding is approved, submit an order for Oxford Open via OUP Author Services
    1. On the Licensing page, select the CC-BY licence as required by the RCUK
    2. On the Article Charges page, refer the charges to "Newcastle University - RCUK"
    3. Provide details of your RCUK funder(s) and grant number(s)
  3. OUP will refer your request and subject to available funds we will authorise payment

PLoS

The PLoS prepayment scheme allows RCUK-funded authors to have their open access charges paid from our institutional account at a reduced rate for all PLoS journals.

Instructions for corresponding authors:

  1. Apply for RCUK open access funding
  2. When submitting your article in PLoS Editorial Manager select 'Newcastle University' in the section on Institutional Fee Support
  3. PLoS institutional account payment
  4. PLoS will notify us of your request and subject to available funds we will authorise payment
  5. The article will be published as open access with a CC-BY licence as required by the RCUK.

Sage

The Sage prepaid account allows RCUK-funded authors to have their article publishing charge paid from our institutional account. This also offers a discounted APC of £200+VAT for RCUK-funded articles in Sage journals with a paid open access option (Sage Choice).

  1. On acceptance, apply for RCUK open access funding
  2. Subject to approval and available funds we will contact Sage to authorise payment from our institutional account
  3. The article will be published as open access with a CC-BY licence as required by the RCUK

Taylor and Francis

The Taylor and Francis open access prepayment scheme allows RCUK-funded authors to have their open access charges paid from our institutional account. This also grants a 10% discount on the standard APC for all Taylor and Francis journals with a paid open access option.

  1. On acceptance, apply for RCUK open access funding
  2. Subject to approval and available funds we will contact Taylor and Francis to authorise payment from our institutional account
  3. The article will be published as open access with a CC-BY licence as required by the RCUK

Wiley

The Wiley prepayment scheme allows RCUK-funded authors to have their article publishing charge paid from our institutional account. This also grants a 25% discount on the standard APC for all Wiley open access journals and subscription journals offering OpenOnline.

Instructions for corresponding authors:

  1. Apply for RCUK open access funding
  2. On Wiley's OnlineOpen payment form select 'Newcastle University (RCUK-funded only)'
  3. Select the CC-BY licence as required by the RCUK
  4. Wiley will send us a request to authorise payment
  5. Subject to approval and available funds we will authorise payment from our account
  6. The article will be published as open access with a CC-BY licence as required by the RCUK
