Our Chemical Engineering MSc will equip you with a multidisciplinary knowledge of chemical engineering in areas such as fuel cells, control, intensification and sustainability. It is intended for honours graduates with a chemical engineering degree who wish to advance their knowledge in the chemical and process engineering design.
The course meets the industry’s growing need for chemical engineers and provides an understanding of theory and its application in an economic and environmentally suitable way. It gives scientists and engineers the opportunity to work with researchers in the fields of new energy technologies and new advanced materials.
You will gain specialist knowledge and understanding via lectures, seminars and personal supervision. You will develop an understanding of:
- chemical processes
- model based approaches to process control and measurement
- process intensification and modelling
- latest research developments in chemical engineering
We are seeking Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) accreditation, so you can be assured that you will graduate with a degree that meets the standards set out by the chemical engineering industry.
You will have a unique opportunity to complete a three month work placement with a local company or research organisation. Projects vary from examining the sustainability of existing or new processes, to environmental assessment and energy efficiency, and examination of Carbon Reduction Potential versus the Potential Risk.

The School occupies five floors in Merz Court, and we provide a Student Common Room and a separate Student Study Space.

EU students starting at Newcastle in 2018 and 2019 will pay the UK (Home) tuition fee for the full duration of their course.
At least a 2:1 honours degree, or an international equivalent in Chemical Engineering. Graduates from Newcastle University will be considered with a 2:2 in BEng Chemical Engineering.
You will also be considered if you have relevant industrial experience.

You can study our Pre-sessional English course at the INTO Newcastle Centre.
You may need an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance certificate. You'll need to get this before you can get your visa or study on this programme. We'll let you know about the ATAS requirement in your offer letter.

The course starts in September. There is no application closing date for this course.
We suggest international students apply at least two months before the course starts. This is so that you have enough time to make the necessary arrangements.
If you live outside the UK/EU you must:
- pay a deposit of £1,500
- or submit an official letter of sponsorship
The deposit is payable after you receive an offer to study at Newcastle University. The deposit is non-refundable, but is deducted from your tuition fees when you register.
