A feature of the course is the design of electrical systems for transportation and renewable energy applications. This is a particular specialism of our researchers in the School of Engineering.
You will develop knowledge of industry-standard computer-aided design and analysis techniques. You'll gain a practical understanding of software packages such as:

You will research a specialist topic of your choice through an in-depth project. Innovative educational techniques will equip you with practical design skills and research methodologies.
On graduating, you will have the knowledge and practical experience ready for a career in electrical power engineering. Your learning and research skills will also provide a solid foundation for further study.
You take modules to a total value of 180 credits over three semesters. 120 credits of taught modules take place during the first and second semesters. The course comprises a mixture of:
- practical laboratory classes
You'll learn in modern lecture theatres equipped with audiovisual equipment. Blackboard, a web-based Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), supports your taught modules. Practical sessions are in small groups in modern laboratories with extensive computing facilities.
You will sit exams in January and May/June. You will complete your 60 credit individual project over semesters two and three. Your background reading and design work take place over semester two. Most of your dissertation preparation and experimental work will be in semester three.

- 6 week Pre-sessional entry: IELTS 6.0 overall (with 1 sub-skill at 5.0 and 3 sub-skills at 5.5)
- 10 week Pre-sessional entry: IELTS 5.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.0 in all sub-skills)

The course starts in September. There is no application closing date for this course.
We suggest international students apply at least two months before the course starts. This is so that you have enough time to make the necessary arrangements.
If you live outside the UK/EU you must:
- pay a deposit of £1,500
- or submit an official letter of sponsorship
The deposit is payable after you receive an offer to study at Newcastle University. The deposit is non-refundable, but is deducted from your tuition fees when you register.
