Overview
The Coaching and Mentoring MSc is a part-time blended learning programme. This includes one-day monthly study blocks, so you can study around your own commitments.
There will also be opportunities to work on real-world challenges, enabling you to explore the world of coaching and mentoring.
You'll be able to:
- study the theory behind coaching and mentoring
- practice what you learn
- complete your own research

What you'll learn
After completing the programme, you'll be able to:
- apply knowledge and theory to real-world challenges
- evaluate and prioritise components of coaching and mentoring. This will inform professional practice at individual, organisational and societal levels
- understand the challenges of responsible coaching and mentoring for more sustainable practice
- combine and evaluate concepts, theories and frameworks relevant to responsible coaching and mentoring. You'll apply this to complex organisational contexts
- interpret dilemmas and find creative solutions within the context of coaching and mentoring practice
- design, undertake and apply research to meet individual and/or organisational needs through coaching and mentoring
- identify, analyse and evaluate qualitative and quantitative data for decision making in the global context
- recognise the role of supervision in ethical practice
Modules
You will study modules on this course. A module is a unit of a course with its own approved aims and outcomes and assessment methods.
Module information is intended to provide an example of what you will study.
Our teaching is informed by research. Course content changes periodically to reflect developments in the discipline, the requirements of external bodies and partners, and student feedback.
Full details of the modules on offer will be published through the Programme Regulations and Specifications ahead of each academic year. This usually happens in May.

Phase 1 (Year 1: Semesters 1 and 2)
The focus of this phase is to Explore. It will enable you to understand workplace performance in a global context.
This phase includes four compulsory 20 credit modules. The modules are designed to provide you with a broad understanding of the main theories of coaching and mentoring to enhance development of people and organisations.
Two modules per semester are taught in parallel.
Phase 2 (Year 2: Semesters 1 and 2)
Building on the core understanding developed in Phase 1, the focus of this phase is to Challenge. These modules will enable you to shape and lead the future of work through coaching and mentoring practice.
Phase 3 (Year 2: Semesters 2 and 3)
The focus of this phase is to Demonstrate Impact. This phase will enable you to apply your learning and development in Phases 1 and 2 and to Demonstrate Impact by undertaking the following 60 credit module:
This practical research-based module, together with the Exploring Theory in Practice modules in Phase 2, will enhance your current and future employability. You will also be able to produce outputs that challenge and develop you, and your organisational and global practices.
How you'll learn
Lectures and seminars
Our Coaching and Mentoring MSc is delivered using a blended learning model with one-day monthly study blocks on campus during teaching time. You'll benefit from studying in a variety of learning environments, both on campus and online.
The programme covers the core components of coaching and mentoring. You'll also be able to explore your own areas of interest through research.
Virtual learning
Your engagement with flexible learning activities will be supported and enhanced by our modern and intuitive virtual learning environment, Canvas. Canvas is a web-based system that does not need to be installed on your computer. Canvas runs on:

- any other device with a modern web browser
Depending on your modules, you'll be assessed through a combination of:
- Case study
- Dissertation

- Research proposal
Skills are assessed through a range of assessments such as:

- individual practice-based assessment reports

Your teaching and learning is also supported by Canvas. Canvas is a Virtual Learning Environment. You'll use Canvas to submit your assignments and access your:

You'll also be assigned an academic member of staff. They will be your personal tutor throughout your time with us. They can help with academic and personal issues.

Fees and funding
Tuition fees for 2023 entry (per year)
If your studies last longer than one year, your tuition fee may increase in line with inflation.
Depending on your residency history, if you’re a student from the EU, other EEA or a Swiss national, with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you’ll normally pay the ‘Home’ tuition fee rate and may be eligible for Student Finance England support.
EU students without settled or pre-settled status will normally be charged fees at the ‘International’ rate and will not be eligible for Student Finance England support.
