The Iland Postgraduate Research Studentship Award (for research relating to themes on European culture, political thought, language and literature)

Value of award

The award will provide a fully funded doctoral studentship which includes payment of UK/EU tuition fees in full and a living maintenance award at the UKRI’s national rate.

Number of awards

More than one Iland Research Scholarship may be made available at one time subject to the value of the endowment.

Start date and duration

1 October 2020

 Three years full-time or six years part-time (subject to satisfactory progress).

 Applicants who have already commenced their doctoral studies are eligible to apply providing they will have completed no more than 18 months of full-time or 36 months of part-time study by 1 October 2020.

Overview

The Iland Postgraduate Research Scholarship is available to UK/EU students commencing a PhD in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in the 2020/21 academic year. The topic of student’s research must relate to themes on European culture, political thought, language and literature.

The Iland Postgraduate Research Scholarship Award is generously funded by William Iland. A recipient of the French Legion d'Honneur and the Bletchley Park Commemorative medal, Mr Iland had a strong commitment to the power of a European ideal and in the importance of co-operation to help stabilise the European.

A wonderful and much commemorated teacher, Mr Iland had a deep appreciation of the transformative power of learning, and this generous bequest is made so that future generations of students can work on ideals of European solidarity.

The recipient is required to provide the sponsor with an annual update on their progress.

Applicants to the AHRC Northern Bridge Consortium and ESRC Northern Ireland North East (NINE) Doctoral Training Partnership studentship competitions may also apply for The Iland Postgraduate Research Studentship Award.

Applicants must submit a completed Iland Postgraduate Research Studentship Application Form 2020 and a current CV (maximum two sides of A4) to Hassphd.scholarships@ncl.ac.uk by 4:00pm on Monday 18 May 2020. Please ensure that your email is clearly titled ‘Iland Postgraduate Research Studentship Award Application.’

The successful applicant will be notified by Monday 15 June 2020.
