Social Life

How we're keeping you safe in COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic means your social life will be different when the 2020 academic year starts.

Our Students' Union is planning an exciting range of welcome activities, including an extended and improved Give It a Go programme of:

  • workshops
  • events
  • classes

You'll also be able to choose from over 200 clubs and societies. They will hold activities online as well as hosting some face-to-face events, where it's safe to do so.

Visit our Students' Union website for the latest plans.

We're following the guidance from the government and sport's National Governing Body when it comes to opening our sports facilities.

We plan to reopen our Sports and Fitness Centre on 7 September.

We hope to offer our usual range of services, but these will be adapted to meet guidelines.

We'll be reducing the capacity of our sports centre and introducing a one-way system to ensure physical distancing. We'll also be cleaning facilities more regularly.

Members will be asked to book their activities in advance either online, or through Sports App, so we can manage numbers safely.

City Life

Newcastle is a great place to be a postgraduate - it's the cosmopolitan capital of the North East. We're famous for our friendliness and the University is at the heart of the city.

As a city based campus we’re in the heart of Newcastle near everything it has to offer, including a vibrant nightlife.

Located in the beautiful north east of England the city is surrounded by countryside, while the dramatic coastline is only a 20 minute drive away. We are extremely proud of our friendly and welcoming city, and our students agree.

Newcastle is exceptional for shopping with around 600 shops in the city centre. One of the UK’s largest city-centre shopping centres intu Eldon Square is just a few minutes walk from campus.

The traditional Victorian Grainger Market provides an authentic market experience right in the city centre. A short train or bus ride will take you to the MetroCentre, Europe's largest indoor shopping and leisure complex. You can also visit over 200 stalls at the Quayside Sunday Market.

Studying at Newcastle University, you’ll be living in one of the UK’s best student cities.

Newcastle has lots to offer including mainstream, art-house and foreign language films and a lively comedy circuit.

Contemporary art is on offer at BALTIC art gallery and the traditional but eclectic Laing Art Gallery. The Great North Museum is right on campus, with the excellent Discovery Museum nearby.

All types of live music can be found at Newcastle's venues, ranging from small bars to the huge Arena stadium. Theatre lovers can delight in the annual visits by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre and Opera North.

The city is home to Premier League Newcastle United and the Newcastle Falcons rugby club. Newcastle also hosts the world’s biggest half marathon, the Great North Run.

As a city campus we’re located in the heart of Newcastle near everything it has to offer, including the Quayside.

With our multi-million pound on-campus sports complex, we are one of the top universities for sport in the country.
