ARC8065 : Cities and Culture (Inactive)

Semester 2 Credit Value: 20
ECTS Credits: 10.0

This module aims to lead to an understanding of urban design in the context of another European country and to encourage innovative engagement with a different culture and place of study. Students are asked to map out the locality at hand, not only from its physical perspective but also the social tissue. The students get to engage with the real communities and be creative in using communication given language barriers. The projects focus mainly on the use of the public domain, and work across the disciplines and cultures represented by the diverse groups of students who are called to challenge their perceptions and generate new collective ways of working.

The module involves a 5 day trip to the study area which is a city in Europe, changing every couple of years. Some of the work is done on site and is followed up with design tutorials culminating in a final presentation and a book comprising of the work of the student groups and texts by key people involved.

This project is aimed at helping the students familiarise themselves with appreciating a different social and physical context and proposing interventions based on their understanding of it by developing a brief in conjunction with local actors. The project also helps students link theory and design through a series of seminars and presentations based on key texts on community participation. The student get varied experience and develop their awareness and skills in a number of areas such as urban design at various scales, community participation, illustration, conducting interviews, and collaborative working within multidisciplinary teams.

If necessary due to any Covid-19 restrictions small group teaching would take place online and the 40 hours of physical field study would be replaced with an online virtual design studio.
