To introduce students to marine renewable energy technologies, spatial planning, capital and economic considerations.

Outline Of Syllabus

The module will cover the following topics:

Framing the imperatives and the macro-economic environment for marine renewable energy projects. Components of the industry. Overview of regulatory framework. De-carbonising the UKL economy/climate change
A thorough understanding of complex variable techniques including Cauchy Riemann equations and the evaluation of the Cauchy Integral
Fluid Dynamics
Underpinning fluid dynamics from a first degree including potential flow, streamlines, stream function and potential function. Solution of Laplace’s equation in two variables.
Underpinning knowledge for identification, capture and utilization of wind, wave and tidal energy sources.
Current portfolio, emerging technologies. Spatial Planning
What is spatial planning? What are the key considerations? Who are the stakeholders? What space is needed? Conflicts with other activities
Evaluating project feasibility, securing project finance Case Studies
Predominantly offshore wind, tidal exemplars, wave emerging technologies.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Students are encouraged to develop their knowledge and understanding of the subject by independent reading for which they are given guidance in the distance learning material (IKO1-3). The preschool study is reinforced via lectures during the intensive school itself. The use of design during the intensive school and work-based assessments and application after the intensive school also enable the students to learn. Subject specific skills (e.g. IT and project planning) are developed via the distance learning material, which is delivered by a web-based system (Canvas). Cognitive skills (problem solving/ decision making) are taught primarily through case studies and design classes, and developed through work based assignments. Key transferable skills (communication, time management, ability to work alone etc) are developed through work based pre-school assignment and via completion of the module itself, including the distance learning material (ISO1-9).

Should the public health situation require it, the present-in-person teaching activities?will be replaced by a mix of synchronous and asynchronous online sessions.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

Knowledge and understanding are assessed via the unseen written examination and the written assignment. Subject-specific and cognitive skills are assed via design exercises and the module assignments, as are communication skills. The Graduate Skills Framework Skills indicated as 'A' are also assessed in this way.

Should the public health situation require it, the planned examination scheduled to be completed present-in-person will be replaced by an open book, online examination to be completed within a defined 24 hour period.
