Aims

The module aims to introduce the student to the current issues and research in the field of ageing and health by presenting a state of the art knowledge and experience from clinical experts and researchers specialising in the health of older people. It is a review in-depth of clinical aspects of health in older age and is appropriate to clinicians and non-clinicians alike. This module, OR MMB8011 are compulsory for students wishing to qualify with an MRes in Ageing and Health (4814F). The two modules place emphasis on interactions between the biological and clinical aspects of ageing at many levels. The potential economic and social benefits of advances in gerontology through engagement with business, health and social care services, and the community are also considered. This module may be taken by students wishing to specialise in Ageing and Health or as a stand alone 20 credit module for the MRes and other programmes.

o       Movement disorder
o       Visual Disorders
o       Gastrointestinal disease
o       Musculoskeletal problems and osteoporosis
o       Oral health and nutrition
o       Diabetes
• Interactions of chronic diseases, ageing and health
• Innovative solutions to impairment: rehabilitation and the use of assistive technologies.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Lectures will provide students with current specialist knowledge from clinical experts in the field of ageing and health. The group is small enough to promote interaction with teachers, and seminars (workshops) which will be used for some themes to complement lectures. Both methods will encourage students to reflect individually and in small groups on the state of current knowledge of complex diseases of ageing, based on clinical research.

Critical appraisal, data interpretation and presentation skills will be practised in seminars (all key skills outcomes) and the tutorials will encourage the students to reflect on their learning. Students working in small groups in lectures, seminars and tutorials will encourage collaboration and teamwork. All of these activities relate directly to the learning outcomes above.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The unseen written paper tests the student’s knowledge base, comprehension and ability to discuss the subject critically. The oral presentation tests the student’s ability to present data (communication skills) and the level of their understanding of the subject in the context of a particular example. The short essay tests the student's ability to write concisely and critically on the subject and evaluates their ability to source information around the chosen subject as well as other IT skills associated with scientific writing.
