Aims

This module aims to provide an understanding of failure processes (fatigue, creep, fracture, surface contact fatigue, wear, corrosion and oxidation) that limit the life of engineering structures in order to allow students to estimate and predict the life and reliability of materials and engineering structures.

Outline Of Syllabus

Fatigue in engineering applications: low cycle and high cycle fatigue.
Strength and deformation of metals and alloys at elevated temperature; Creep failure and design against creep.
Contact mechanics: Hertz theory and materials responses to contact stresses.
Friction processes, wear mechanisms and surface contact fatigue.
Lubrication and surface engineering processes to enhance the lifetime of components (gears and bearings).

Corrosion and high temperature oxidation (mechanisms and kinetics).

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Recorded lectures will be used to introduce the main topics. PiP lectures will be used to deliver material not covered in the recorded lectures and also to revise the content of recorded lectures.

Tutorials support the students' private-study in reading around the lecture material and learning to solve the practical engineering problems posed by the Tutorial Questions.



Plan B: In case of Covid-19 disruption:

• PiP lectures will switch to non-synchronous online learning (lecture material in Canvas)

• PiP tutorial sessions will switch to synchronous online learning (delivered via Zoom and Canvas)

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The reports enables a more realistic engineering problem to be considered and assesses the required information acquisition and technical writing skills. It also develops the ability to apply the broad base of scientific principles which underpin engineering design, in conjunction with a deeper knowledge and understanding in a specific subject area.
