Aims

A1. To present an opportunity to undertake advanced research on a topic related to naval architecture, marine engineering, offshore engineering, subsea engineering or pipeline engineering, working largely alone, and to present in a structured form the results of that research. The research may be computational or experimental or a combination of each.
A2. To acquire knowledge in a specialised topic, possibly outside the scope of taught modules.

Outline Of Syllabus

The form of supervision will be agreed between module leader, student and identified potential supervisor, but may be in approximately the following form:
•       Selection of topic for study
•       Writing a study plan
•       Literature review of study subject area
•       Project initiation
•       Project supervision
•       Analysis and interpretation of information
•       Draft review
•       Completion of review
•       Draft dissertation
Completion of dissertation

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Dissertations require, in various measure, literature review, analysis, synthesis evaluation and criticism of the work of others. The format of dissertation should aim at achieving the skills outcomes (ISO1 - 8).

Should the public health situation require it, the present-in-person teaching activities will be replaced by synchronous online sessions

Students should consult their timetable for up-to-date delivery information.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The dissertation is intended to provide the students with an opportunity to carry out a substantial and largely independent piece of research. The examiners assess the ability of a student to produce a written research report which demonstrates the intended learning outcomes.
