Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Research Conference 2020

Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Research Conference 2020

3 March 2020

The conference takes place on Friday 15th May 2020 from 9:30am - 4:30pm in the Dental School Lecture Theatres, Medical School, Newcastle University.

The conference will begin with a Professional Development session which focuses on integrating research and clinical practice.  Professor Barney Dunn will give practical advice on how to remain research active after qualifying.  Professor Dunn is NIHR advocate for practitioner psychologists and in this role, he is tasked with increasing the number of professional psychologists who apply for research funding.  Professor Dunn has spoken to many psychologists and developed a portfolio of case studies covering the spectrum of ways in which research can be incorporated alongside clinical practice, from service evaluation through to a funded research programme.

Professor Dunn will be followed by short talks from four local clinicians; Dr Sarah Verity, Dr Nicola Barclay, Dr Sarah Thwaites and Dr Charlotte Aynsworth about how they have integrated research into their clinical practice and the benefits they have seen from doing so.

In the afternoon, the third year trainees from the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology will discuss their large scale research projects (the culmination of almost 3 years of work), showcasing their research finesse.

There will be three streams consisting of four to five short talks covering three broad topics - 'Psychological Processes in Psychosis', 'Autism and Adult Mental Health' and 'Intolerance of Uncertainty as a Transdiagnostic Process'.  Following this, there will be a keynote talk from Professor Dunn on his work developing ADepT, an extension of CBT for depression that focuses on building capacity for experiencing positive affect, attempting to fill the gap of traditional CBT's more narrow focus on reducing negative affect.  The pilot work for this looks promising and Professor Dunn will present the results of an initial randomised controlled trial of this approach.

Registration is free and further details can be found by clicking on the link to the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Research Conference 2020 poster.
