About the Course

Earthing

In-depth insight into the current state of design and development of network and substation earthing systems.

The course will give you an understanding of the philosophy and design of network and substation earthing systems. We provide a comprehensive review of recent developments in the related standards, specifications and earthing arrangements.

This course is also delivered on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes in the School of Engineering, and you will attend alongside full and part time registered students.

Course Objectives

You will have a good understanding of:

  • why correct earthing is vital
  • the constraints and practical factors affecting earthing design
  • the design of earthing systems for substations and installations in LV, MV and HV supply and distribution networks and buildings
  • the factors to be considered when earthing private and embedded generators

You will:

  • carry out practical exercises, including taking practical measurements and making calculations for earthing assessments and designs with formulae
  • perform simple assessments of new or existing earth systems using published formulae and appreciate their limitations
  • have an awareness of the continually evolving recommendations and specifications related to substation and network earthing.

  • Earth referencing for electricity supply networks.
  • Earthing in MV and HV networks.
  • Earthing in LV networks.
  • Earth potential rise in MV and HV networks.
  • Touch, step and transferred voltages.
  • Resistance of electrodes and earth system.
  • Earth conductor size and jointing methods.
  • Construction, maintenance and cond.
  • Assessment of earth systems.

This course is also delivered as a Module (code EEE8053) on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes, the majority of which can be studied part time, making them suitable for those in employment. You will attend with full and part time registered students. The Academic Module Outline is available via the University's Module Catalogue.
