About the Course

Network Design and Automation

The business and technical aspects of network design and automation are fast-changing. Learn about the latest developments in both rural and urban networks.

You'll get hands-on experience of power system analysis software as well as a good understanding of the different types and needs of current and future communications for automation in distribution systems.

This course is also delivered on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes in the School of Engineering, and you will attend alongside full and part time registered students.

Objectives and Outline

Network Design and Automation

Course Objectives

You'll understand:

  • the basic criteria and constraints of distribution network design
  • the requirements for rural and urban network design and configuration
  • the the business and regulatory drivers for network and automation

We'll provide you with a comprehensive and detailed review of:

  • reliability assessment
  • automation switchgear
  • interface with SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) and GIS (Geographical Information Systems)

You'll be able to:

  • use calculations, evaluation and problem solving skills relevant to power distribution engineering
  • use power system analysis software packages to perform load flow studies, fault calculations, harmonic distortion calculations, and other important power network studies
  • determine plant ratings based on an understanding of the various factors influencing the choice of system voltage and power

This course is also delivered as a Module (code EEE8047) on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes, the majority of which can be studied part time, making them suitable for those in employment. You will attend with full and part time registered students. The Academic Module Outline is available via the University's Module Catalogue.

During the course, you will be able to access course materials electronically using the University Wifi. We suggest that you bring a laptop or tablet with PDF viewer if you wish to refer to the notes during the course. Please ensure that you make sure your electronic device is fully charged, as access to charging points may be limited within the lecture rooms.
