About the Course

Marine and Offshore Project Management

Gain a deep understanding of the key elements of up-to-date marine project management.

Marine project management encompasses many aspects, including:

  • the application of work breakdown structures
  • hierarchical planning
  • the development of a build strategy
  • performance measurement
  • the use of computer aided planning tools
This course will introduce you to new management tools, including discrete event simulation.

This course is also delivered on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes at Newcastle University in Singapore, and you will attend alongside full and part time registered students. If you elect to study the full Masters' programme after completing the module, this is an available option for you.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

  • analyse a marine project
  • develop a work breakdown
  • prepare schedules and identify areas of uncertainty, both contract and technical

You'll understand:

  • the importance of and how to aggregate information into a formal build strategy as means of solving uncertainties
  • how to monitor progress

Course Outline

  1. The need for and application of an appropriate work breakdown structure and the use of a hierarchical structure for planning.
  2. The use of computer aided planning tools, concentrating on benefits and pitfalls rather than training in use of a particular system.
  3. The development of a build strategy for a project, its form, content and benefits.
  4. Performance measurement as a basis for planning and measurement progress.

This course is also delivered as a Module (code MAR8202) on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes, the majority of which can be studied part time, making them suitable for those in employment.
