About the Course

Petroleum in the Environment

An insight into the problems of petroleum production and use, and how to measure the resulting pollution.

This course provides you with an awareness and understanding of:

  • the environmental problems associated with the production and use of petroleum
  • what we can do to ameliorate them.

This course is also delivered on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes in the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, and you will attend alongside full and part time registered students.

Course Objectives

By the time you've finished this course, you'll know:

  • how routine petroleum exploration, production activities, and accidental spillages may result in oil pollution
  • how this pollution impacts the marine environment
  • how we can determine its toxicity

You'll also:

  • understand that waste water is another by-product of oil production
  • be aware of some of the treatments used to minimise the environmental impact of waste water
  • be familiar with case studies of significant oil pollution incidents

You'll develop a good awareness of:

  • the atmospheric pollutants produced when we extract petroleum hydrocarbons and use them as fossil fuels
  • how this could contribute to local environmental problems and global climate change
  • the steps that are being taken to mitigate the effects

You'll be able to interpret geochemical data which describes the fate of spilled hydrocarbons in the environment:

  • for monitoring oil spill remediation
  • for distinguishing hydrocarbon pollutants from different sources

Course Outline

  • Composition of crude oil and petroleum products and naturally occurring hydrocarbons.
  • Sources of hydrocarbon pollution in the environment from conventional and unconventional petroleum exploration and production, transportation and uses as a fuel and feedstock for other products.
  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: their origins, properties and effects.
  • Oil spills and methods for their remediation and minimisation of their impact.
  • Methods for measuring hydrocarbon toxicity and the effects of hydrocarbon pollution in the environment.
  • Case studies of actual oil spills, including the effects of public perception on actions for the treatment of petroleum pollution.
  • Atmospheric pollutants arising from the use of petroleum products as fossil fuels, their effects and their minimisation.

This course is also delivered as a Module (code CEG8626) on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes, the majority of which can be studied part time, making them suitable for those in employment.
